NEWS FROM THE HUT by John Hamilton

Just like many legionnaires, my father, Jack, was also a veteran of two major wars, WWII, and Korea. He enlisted in the Navy along with his brother Guy shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. At the end of WWII, my father was separated from the Navy and returned home to San Diego, California. When the Korean war broke out, he very quickly reenlisted in the Navy with the attitude that he, “Wasn’t going to let those knuckleheads get away with more funny business.”

NEWS FROM THE HUT by John Hamilton

For the past several months, this article has been absent from the Hominy Newspaper. Gary Lanham, the longtime writer of this article, has not been available. Gary is one of the major contributors to the organization of our American Legion Post 142. Gary is the 2nd Vice Commander and Historian for Post 142. He is also a member of the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and very welcomed contributor and fieldtrip organizer with unlimited knowledge of the Air National Guard. Gary joined the USAF 1973, taking Basic Training at Lackland AFB San Antonio TX. Technical training followed at Lowry AFB, Denver Colorado as a weapons systems loader. After a three-month Chemical EOD course at Redstone Army Arsenal in Huntsville Alabama he was assigned to March AFB California in the SAC command (Strategic Air Command) loading B-52 bombers. Gary was transferred to the USAF Reserves at Tinker AFB in the 507th TAC (Tactical Air Command) loading F-105 Thunder Chiefs. Gary also served in the Oklahoma Air/Army National Guard in the 45th Aviation Battalion, 205th Engineering Installation Squadron, 137th Airlift Wing, 138th Fighter Wing, and the 219th Engineering Installation Squadron. Gary Lanham’s awards and decorations number eighteen with many clusters from USAF Meritorious Service to Oklahoma Meritorious Service. Gary’s last few years were served as a traditional guardsman allowing him to begin and retire from AT&T as a senior project manager with a professional certification (PMP) over military/government site projects. After a brief stint as Hominy City Manager, Gary returned to retirement helping with county and community volunteer efforts. We all miss his intellectual insight of the daily operation of our Post and historical knowledge of USAF and the 45th. Everyone at the Post eagerly await Gary’s return. Until Gary’s return to duty, this writer will insufficiently attempt to follow in the Chief’s footsteps.

New Day Same Stuff

As a reminder, we are currently closed at the Hut until further notice. We are all feeling the effects of the current virus situation. I will keep you informed as things progress. So it is Sunday and, as usual, it’s my day to write this week’s article. While you are reading this on Wednesday Sunday, the 29th of March, is now a Federal Holiday. Vietnam Veteran’s Day. With rare exception most of us at the Hut served during that conflict. I did a little research and found out the details.

Attention to Orders!

I want to depart from the usual format to give important new information. Next week and there after I will try to keep you appraised of any new developments. This is from our Adjuant of Post 142 John Hamilton on behalf of post Commander Steve Swinford.

Gentlemen,
Based on Department Commander Ron Gott’s decision, all Department Headquarters meetings are cancelled until further notice. Reasons for the cancellations are recent updates from the American Legion National Organization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention along with State and local officials regarding the Coronavirus COVID-9.
Commander Gott has also recommended cancelling all upcoming meetings to include Spring District Convention/Meetings. The Department Executive Committee (DEC) has voted to cancel the upcoming District 1A/1B Spring Convention/Meetings scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2020.
Based on these previous decisions, the Post Executive Committee (PEC) Post 142 in Hominy has decided to cancel the next two regular Post meetings on Thursday, March 19, 2020 and Thursday, April 2, 2020. The next SAL meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 2020 has also been cancelled.
In addition, the Monday morning breakfasts are cancelled until after the April 16th meeting unless a decision is made to cancel further meetings.

Respectfully,
John Hamilton, BMSN USNR
Adjutant Post 142
CDR SQDN 142
