Blackwell-Frazier American Legion Post #142 Hominy, Oklahoma

I have great regard for many Marines I am acquainted with. Our Post 142 has Bob Hough who fought in WWII in Guadalcanal as well as other Pacific theater landings. David Brave is a local I yak with on FB frequently. Jamie Clark is another Marine locally I FB with. John Henry up in Pawhuska with the Legion Post is an Osage legend. My former commander Lt. Col. Greg Duke was an amazing leader. Of all the Marines I have met everyone of them are extremely proud to be called “Marine”.

On the 11th Month, on the 11th Day, at 11:00 AM. Veterans Day is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars, and Veterans Day 2019 occurs on Monday, November 11. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

Our hometown hero (Ret.) Brig. General Kenneth Taylor was inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame last Saturday evening in Norman Oklahoma. Our Vice Commander Charles O’Leary, Post Adjutant John Hamilton, and this guy attended the banquet and represented at this induction of the guy who shot down the first of four Japanese Zeros when they were sneak attacking Pearl Harbor Hawaii December 7th, 1941. It launched us into WWII. It was an amazing evening, pomp and circumstance. Honorees that were present were humble and credited their comrades and love of American for, what they considered, “no big deal”. There were those that were honored posthumously with stories of amazing courage under fire and the ultimate sacrifice. None were forced to; they just rose to the fatal occasion. A few years ago, we started an initiative to have the General recognized for his accomplishment. After a proclamation was signed by our Mayor, through the City Council, it was forwarded on to then Governor Mary Fallin. She endorsed it and it has been with us for three years.

I usually write my weekly News from the Hut article on Sunday afternoon, tell the public what is going on and, sometimes items in service history. This goes out for my fellow Legionnaire and swaby, John Hamilton. So, it is October 13th. On this day in 1775 the Continental Congress authorized the purchase of two armed warships to patrol for British merchant ships. This act would be considered the birth of what would become the U.S. Navy. During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy sent to sea more than fifty armed vessels of various types. The navy’s squadrons and cruisers seized enemy supplies and carried correspondence and diplomats to Europe, returning with needed munitions.
