On this day in 1951, President Harry Truman presented the Collier Trophy to the Coast Guard, the Department of Defense and the “helicopter industry” in a joint award, citing “outstanding development and use of rotary-winged aircraft for air rescue operations.” Coast Guard commandant VADM Merlin O’Neill accepted the trophy for the Coast Guard. Most of us are familiar with all the videos of the “out to sea” rescues that the Coast Guard performs now and over the years. Many do not know they also served in the South Asian conflicts. December 8^th, 1941. As America’s Pacific fleet lay in ruins at Pearl Harbor President Franklin Roosevelt requests, and receives, a declaration of war against Japan. Leaning heavily on the arm of his son James, a Marine captain, FDR walked haltingly into the House of Representatives at noon to request a declaration of war from the House and address the nation via radio.
