Local Service!

We had the cream of the crop show up Memorial Day to perform the Changing of the Colors, out in front of the Hut. It was a somber ceremony respecting our flag and those who paid the ultimate price to defend it and all it represents. One gentleman pulled over and made it a point to shake every attending veteran’s hand thanking us for our service. I noticed many motorcycles and vehicles pass by looking surprised at our service out front. I guess for some folks it is about hot dogs and burgers.

Well, the flags have been retrieved, and our event leader Babo Carter deserves a big salute once again for running a great crew and logistics ensuring our community could see the patriotism all over the city and cemetery; honoring current heroes serving (Armed Forces Day) and past heroes serving the Supreme Commander (Memorial Day). Salute! Continue reading

Usually, my focus on some of our members are relatively short. The reason is that most served one tour of duty or maybe two. This week will be a long one due to a lasting career, by a person who continues in service today to the community. Our Post Commander, Charles “Doc” O’Leary, was born October 1947. He attended Basic Training in the U.S. Army at Fort Polk, LA…home of “Tiger Land” in 1967. But, instead of getting sent there, he was sent to Ft. Dix, NJ in the winter time, and issued a M-14 rifle for jungle training in preparation for Vietnam, where they were using M-16 rifles [Army intelligence?]. Continue reading

If you were not there…you missed out! Chaplin Rex Mantooth was honored last Friday, in a ceremony at the Osage County Inter-local Cooperative facility on Main Street. The list of dignitaries (Besides the guest of honor) included our Senator Eddie Fields, as well as Hominy native and House of Representative for our area Sean Roberts. The list grew as American Legion Commander Charles O’Leary, Vice Commander Steve Swinford, Dick Pope, Jerry Sebert, and this humble correspondent attended. Indeed many family members and friends were there to see the honor. We appreciated a representative from our wonderful newspaper coming out to capture the event for posterity. A special thanks to the Cooperative crew, for extending the use of the conference room that added a special touch. Continue reading
