Every now and then it’s nice to have a quiet week. We are starting to
see the beginnings of fall and anticipate the pending change of colors
as the foliage begins to turn toward the approaching season. This year
should be particularly spectacular given the level of rain we have
experienced compared to the past two years before. And like the change
of season you can count on football, chili, and the Fairfax Veteran’s
Day Parade. Continue reading

We have lots to cover this week so let’s get started! This past
Thursday evening we had the best BBQ chicken, potato salad, baked beans
(best I ever had Eli), okra, peach cobbler, and (we WERE lucky), Babe
Long’s bunt cake. Babe even went as far as Marvin’s to bring us the
best coleslaw. It was a fantastic meal enjoyed by everyone. A special

I always enjoy seeing Dick Pope on Monday morning Koffee Klatches. He
always has a ready smile and now and then gives me fodder for an

interruptions. It was a somber day of remembrance. Flags were flow at
half-mast until sundown all across the USA. Continue reading

first major game of the season between Cleveland and our Hominy Bucks
at Cleveland we had a good showing of ten. Vice Commander Steve
Swinford led the formal opening, Treasurer Jack Cross provided our
budgetary update, and then it was cake (thanks Babe!) and cookies (a
nod to Rex). A good part of our time was trading “war stories” amongst
ourselves. All were humorous and usually based around food eaten around
the world while in the service. Continue reading

I was thinking about this week’s article and drawing off resources to
blend the Labor Day holiday with those who have served, I came upon a
gem. The Department of Labor had an interesting post I wanted to pass
along. Many in our Post represent our Greatest Generation. Not only did
our men serve honorably during WWII but so did the women as do our
ladies of the Auxillary.
Certainly, one of the more readily recognizable icons of labor is
“Rosie the Riveter,” the tireless World War II-era woman who rolled up
her sleeves, flexed her arm muscles and said, “We Can Do It!” But, this
isn’t the original Rosie. Continue reading
