“News from the Hut”: 6 May 2013

for American Legion Post #142; Hominy, Oklahoma.
>>> by Gary Lanham

Our Thursday night meeting was headed by Post Commander Jim Frazier, who
updated the group on what happened at the District Convention a week
prior.  He also brought up an event that occurs the first Wednesday of
each month at 1500 hours (3:00 PM) at Ft Gibson’s Shelter Area.  It
turns out that they conduct a funeral service for veterans who have no
family to claim them, many homeless.  They are given honors for their
service to our country and laid to rest with fellow patriots.  The full
honors are bestowed to those being laid to rest and flag presented to
the keeper of this field of honor.  Many of these former soldiers were
homeless veterans, who for one reason or another fell to hard times.  Jim
noted the majority were Vietnam veterans. Continue reading

I had the privilege of attending the District 1A and 1B American Legion
Convention in Pryor, Oklahoma last Saturday.  I ran into Our Post Commander
Jim Frazier and his wife Polly, as well as Jack Cross (Post Treasurer)
and Charles O’Leary.  I also saw an old acquaintance from my military
duty days, I had not seen since 1997.  This was a first for me, and I was
impressed with the organization and productiveness of the meeting.  We
had a guest speaker who, retired now, was the first Marine to return to
combat duty after losing a leg in Iraq.  He continues to press for
respect, assistance, and utilization for wounded warriors.  What an
inspiration he was. Continue reading

“News from the Hut”: 22 April 2013

for American Legion Post #142; Hominy, Oklahoma.

Well, as I reported last week, it was a special time for our local heroes
Dick Pope and Babe Long. April 17th marked a historic journey for two
of our World War II veteran’s to the National Capitol to tour amazing memorials
and historical commemorations of our collective history as a free
nation. While Babe stayed in the area to visit relatives, Dick
returned packed with souvenirs and stories. Besides commemorative hats,
shirts, and coins, one special treat was a handwritten letter from a
5th grader named Allysn from Owasso, contained in a beautiful
cover that displayed “Home of the Free BECAUSE of the Brave”. The
letter was very nice, and not what I would call cookie cutter. It
expressed gratitude for his service, but also asked questions wondering
about his experiences during that war far from home. Among all the
bounty he brought to us at the Thursday evening meeting, I believed he
found that letter the true treasure. A thoughtful future generation. Continue reading
