“News from the Hut”: 15 April 2013

for American Legion Post #142; Hominy, Oklahoma.
>>> by Gary Lanham

This will be a special week for Hominy American Legion Post #142 and two particular heroes’ Babe Long and Richard Pope.  April 17th marks a historic journey for two of our WWII veteran’s to the National Capitol, to tour amazing memorials and historical commemorations of our collective history as a free nation.  These icons that stand as witness to our God given rights rest in the documents preserved, memorials to our patriots though all wars, and the Tomb of the unknown lost.  This visit will culminate in the most recent memorial recognizing the incredible courage and sacrifice of our greatest generation, the World War II Memorial.  It is captured in a recreation of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. A few weeks ago I shared those details while discussing Charles O’Leary’s visit to Arizona and the recognition of Ira Hayes who participated in the raising of the flag at Mount Suribachi.

“News from the Hut”: 1 April 2013

for American Legion Post #142; Hominy, Oklahoma.
>>>by Gary Lanham

It was great getting back home and settling in with the gang at the
Monday morning meeting.  Our fellowship included the regular cast of
characters Babe Long, Dick Pope, John Field, Rex Mantooth, Eli Prather
and our illustrious Post Commander, Jim Frazier.  When I asked Jim why
there were scorch marks on the ceiling, he explained that for the last
Thursday evening meeting (which I missed, being out of town) …he had brought a
birthday cake for his 66th birthday.  Unlike Rex’s birthday a few months
ago, he was able to get a waiver from the fire dept.   So that explains
that.  It’s an easy fix, a wet rag and good as new.
Happy belated birthday Jim!

State Rep. Sean Roberts, Steve Swinford, Jim Frazier, and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Rita Aragon.

OKLAHOMA CITY – March 14th, State Rep. Sean Roberts recently welcomed
representatives of the Hominy Chapter of the American Legion to the
Oklahoma State Capitol.

“The American Legion is a widely respected organization and it was a
pleasure to meet with them,” said Roberts, R-Hominy. “We presented them
with flags to show our appreciation and to let them know how much we
value their service.”

Roberts and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Rita Aragon, who currently
serves as the secretary of Oklahoma Department of Veterans’ Affairs,
presented to Hominy Chapter members Steve Swinford and Jim Frazier
Oklahoma and American flags that had been flown over the state Capitol.

“The state and nation have been served well by our veterans,” said
Aragon. “And now as we lean on them again to help find employment for
our brothers and sisters who need to find jobs across our state, the
governor and I thank those veteran service organizations that volunteer
to serve those who served our nation. The contributions these VSO’s
make are extremely valuable in every veteran’s life and they continue
to serve their fellow veterans.”

American Legion Post 142, “The Hut,” is the Hominy Chapter of the
American Legion. It was established after World War I by Congress to
ensure veteran’s rights. Frazier serves as the post commander.
