“News from the Hut”: 25 March 2013

for American Legion Post #142; Hominy, Oklahoma.

Working out of town this week, I was disappointed to miss the third
Thursday evening meeting at the Hut (Post #142). It always promises a
good evening patriotic pride, community pride, and joking at each
other’s expense that only a veteran who has served can appreciate. I
always count on Post Commander Jim Frazier to provide me with details
of the meeting.

This was a special week for our Post. Post Commander Jim Frazier and Steve Swinford were presented an American flag and Oklahoma State flag this past week at our State Capitol in Oklahoma City. These flags were flown over our Capitol for one day and were presented to honor our Post for the service of our veterans and the community service of our Post. The distinguished presenters were our own hometown hero House Representative Sean Roberts and one of my personal favorite heroes, Major General Rita Aragon (Ret). Though retired from the military she continues to fight for veteran’s rights for Governor Fallin as the head of Oklahoma Veteran’s Affairs. Jim and Steve were presented the flags and an official proclamation of recognition which will soon be displayed at the Post framed. Continue reading

It is amazing to me how much can happen in the short span of a week. I sometimes wonder what I am going to contribute each week and somehow things just seem to come together.  At our Thursday night meeting the topic of Memorial Day weekend and Armed Forces day arose (can you believe how fast winter blew by?).  Babo reported that high winds and bad weather last year destroyed over six hundred flags the Post had placed in various places. Now we find ourselves in need of donations to replace those flags so we can honor our past patriots.  If you are a current patriot that believes in recognizing the service of our past defenders of freedom and want to contribute call Babo at 918-885-6041. It will be appreciated! Continue reading

Finding treasure in your own backyard is common in Hominy, Oklahoma.  They are your Hometown Heroes.  Men and women who at one point of their life raised their right hand and swore an oath to defend with their lives the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.  I have the privilege of hanging around these heroes most every Monday morning with breakfast, before speeding off to my real job. Well, Mother Nature had her say last week, cancelling our Thursday get together; but there are still things to share so here I go!  We received good news from our local boy who has made Hominy proud.  House Representative Sean Roberts arranged to have our Stars and Stripes, as well as the Oklahoma State flag, flown over the State Capitol. They now await a presentation to officers of our Post, 14 March at the State Capitol. The ceremony will include (at this time) Post Commander Jim Frazier and officers Charlie O’Leary, Babo, Steve Swinford, House Rep Sean Roberts, and Major General Rita Aragon (Ret.) who acts as Governor Mary Fallin’s Veteran’s Affairs Liaison. I would like to send a personal thanks to Sean’s assistant Blake Jackson, for working out the arrangements.  You did great. Continue reading
