Armed Forces Day – May 19th

The United States has celebrated Armed Forces Day on the third Saturday in May since 1950. When the separate departments for each military service branch were placed under the new Department of Defense in the late 1940s, it was decided that there should be one all-inclusive service day to recognize each uniformed branch and those who serve in it.

Many countries around the world have versions of this holiday. As with these other countries, Armed Forces Day is a chance for the people of the United States to celebrate its active national military, while Memorial Day and Veterans Day are meant to honor those who have served in the past. Across the country, through events such as air shows and open houses, the military shows the public what it does and how it’s done. Continue reading

Legion issues report on VA rural health care

The American Legion released its final report May 9 on the quality of rural health care being provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. To view the report, click here.

The report is based on information collected by the Legion’s System Worth Saving (SWS) Task Force, which evaluated VA medical centers across the country from last November to February. Continue reading

Facebook followers of The American Legion are encouraged to head to an enhanced American Legion National Headquarters page and click “Like.” The page now features news from National Headquarters regarding Legion programs, promotions and the organization’s daily activities. The page also contains direct links to the Legion’s other Facebook pages, including the national convention and American Legion Riders.

VA releases 2012 health benefits handbook

The Department of Veterans Affairs has released its 2012 VA Health Benefits Handbook. To download a copy, click here.  The handbook is designed to provide veterans and their families with the information needed to understand VA’s health-care system, including eligibility requirements, health benefits and services available to help veterans, and copays that certain veterans may be charged.

Any veterans who have questions related to their health-care benefits can contact The American Legion Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Division by email.
