Iraq War Ends: Nation Should Emulate Troops’ Service, Sacrifice

WASHINGTON, Dec. 17, 2011 – The American military exhibits the best the country has to offer, President Barack Obama said in his weekly address on Saturday, 17 Dec. 2011.

The last U.S. service members are leaving Iraq after almost nine years of combat. They leave a country and citizenry that has a chance to chart its own course in a tough neighborhood.

More than 1.5 million Americans served in Iraq and tens of thousands have been wounded. “Military families have sacrificed greatly — none more so than the families of those nearly 4,500 Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice,” the president said. “All of them — our troops, veterans and their families — will always have the thanks of a grateful nation.” Continue reading

Legion: Reconsider pipeline delay

The proposed Keystone Pipeline would carry oil from Canada, to the nearby oil depot in Cushing, Oklahoma.

From the National Organization>>>

Pointing out that unemployed veterans need jobs now, American Legion National Commander Fang Wong is encouraging President Obama to speed-up production of the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline.

“We are very disappointed that President Obama is delaying the approval for this needed project,” Wong said. “This project alone has the potential to create 20,000 construction and manufacturing jobs and stimulate related business activity that could lead to at least 250,000 permanent jobs. Returning veterans are disproportionately unemployed and would undoubtedly benefit from these jobs. Moreover, the United States must reduce its reliance on energy imports that can be disrupted by foreign conflicts, terrorism or piracy.”

The $7 billion privately funded pipeline would carry an estimated 700,000 barrels of oil per day from Canada, the Dakotas, Montana and Oklahoma to Gulf Coast refineries. It has undergone years of environmental review but must be approved by the State Department since it would cross an international border. The oil would be extracted from Canada’s tar sands. Last summer, delegates to The American Legion’s 93rd National Convention in Minneapolis passed Resolution 107 in which they urged all segments of the U.S. government to pursue and grant all required permits for the proposed pipeline “without further delay.” Continue reading

Hallowed Waters: Pearl Harbor marks 70 years

From the National Organization>>>

By Floyd K. Takeuchi – December 7, 2011

Just after 8 a.m., our Navy launch comes alongside the small jetty at the eastern edge of a simple white sway-top building. Above us, the Stars and Stripes is stirred by gentle tropical trade winds.

Perhaps this is what it was like 70 years ago, on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii: white clouds etched on a deep blue sky, launches crisscrossing the calm waters of the U.S. naval base, and gray warships berthed at shoreside docks.

What happened next changed the United States and the world. Just before 8 a.m. local time, the first wave of Japanese carrier-based fighters and bombers swooped down on an unsuspecting U.S. Pacific Fleet at anchor in Pearl Harbor, on the southern shore of the island of Oahu. At 8:06 a.m. – almost the exact time I step off the Navy launch at the USS Arizona Memorial this particular morning – an armor-piercing bomb penetrated the deck of the proud battleship and exploded, setting off the forward ammunition magazine and triggering U.S. entry into World War II.  Continue reading
