2011 American Legion Consolidated Post Report

American Legion Post 142 - Hominy, OK

>>>From the National Organization

Approximately 60 percent of American Legion posts submit annual reports to National Headquarters quantifying local activities that support the organization’s mission and values. Across the country and beyond, the Legion helps hundreds of thousands of veterans, military families, schools and young people. The report presents that involvement in terms of dollars raised, volunteer hours put in, events coordinated and people affected.

A snapshot of that activity appears in the 2011 Consolidated Post Report, recently summarized by the Legion’s Internal Affairs Division. “Every year, this report shows just how important The American Legion family is to local communities,” immediate Past American Legion National Commander Jimmie L. Foster said. “Even with only 60 percent of posts reporting, it’s a very impressive set of numbers.”

American Legion posts are encouraged to submit their Consolidated Post Reports online using myLegion.org. Paper report forms are mailed annually to departments’ headquarters and distributed to local posts for completion. Continue reading

Wong elected National Commander

Fang Wong, National Commander of the American Legion

>>>by Steve B. Brooks, National Organization
As a Vietnam veteran, Fang Wong remembers how veterans of that war were treated when they returned home. It’s those same veterans’ responsibility to ensure a similar homecoming doesn’t await the men and women who are fighting the war on terror.

That was part of the focus of Wong’s acceptance speech in Minneapolis Thursday after being elected The American Legion’s national commander for 2011-2012. The New York Legionnaire and member of Lt. B.R. Kimlau Post 1291 in New York City said the future of the organization depends on welcoming younger veterans into the fold, as well as advocating on their behalf.

“Most of us will never forget the way veterans were treated as they came home from the war and as they fought for recognition of their unique war-related health problems in the years that followed,” Wong said. “As the largest bloc of veterans represented in this organization today, those of us who served in Vietnam are duty-bound to ensure the same mistakes will not happen to the next generation of veterans. It is our duty to uphold and defend the rights and benefits of today’s new generation of wartime veterans and welcome them into The American Legion with open arms. They are the future of our organization.”

Wong – who was sworn in by Past National Commander John Brieden and presented the colors by Past National Commander Ron Conley – promised to represent and advocate on behalf of all Legionnaires, as well as the policies of the organization. He presented a list of priorities for the year. Continue reading

Legion makes good on Foster’s motto

>>>From the National Organization:

When elected a year ago, American Legion National Commander Jimmie L. Foster announced that his motto for the year would be S.A.V.E.D. – Serving America’s Veterans Every Day.

On Tuesday in Minneapolis, Foster told national convention delegates that their efforts made it possible to live up to that mantra during his year-long tenure.

“You, the Legion family members in this audience – and those in posts, units and squadrons around the world – are indeed, Serving America’s Veterans Every Day,” Foster told convention delegates. “Through programs like Operation Comfort Warriors, Heroes to Hometowns, the Legacy Fund, the Family Support Network, the National Emergency Fund and countless others, you are ensuring that America does not forget the debt that we owe our heroes.

“No debt is greater than that which America owes her veterans. George Washington was absolutely correct when he said, ‘The willingness with which young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceived veterans were treated and appreciated by our nation.'” Continue reading

While the United States is in a time of fiscal restraint, President Barack Obama pledged on Tuesday that the restraint won’t include cutting benefits of America’s veterans.

Addressing The American Legion’s 93rd Annual National Convention in Minneapolis, Obama said veterans wouldn’t bear the brunt of federal cutbacks.

“As a nation, we’re facing tough choices as we put our fiscal house in order,” the president said, getting a standing ovation from the crowd of thousands in the process. “But I want to be absolutely clear: We cannot, we must not, and we will not balance the budget on the backs of our veterans. And as commander-in-chief, I won’t allow it. Continue reading
