The gray obelisk monument at Pointe du Hoc, a location often described as the most dangerous in the European campaign of World War II, was recently destined to collapse into the English Channel.

It took what American Battle Monuments Commission Secretary Max Cleland called the best of both worlds – “American money and French ingenuity” – to strengthen the earth around the cliff-side memorial, which pays tribute to the U.S. Army Rangers who sustained 70 percent casualties to take out German positions on the coast between Omaha and Utah Beaches on June 6, 1944. The site was rededicated Monday, on the 67th anniversary of D-Day. Continue reading

American Legion National Commander Jimmie L. Foster shook hands with  some of history’s most revered combat veterans Saturday in Normandy,  France. Joined by American Legion Auxiliary National President Carlene Ashworth,  Foster sat at the head table of the annual Association Des Amis Des  Americains banquet in Ste. Mere-Eglise, the first town liberated in the U.S. Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.  Continue reading

Memorial Day Joint-Observance Scheduled

May 30th–American Legion Post #142 and Auxiliary Unit #142 has scheduled a Memorial Day joint-observance.

This event will be at the American Legion Hut, 118 South Wood, in Hominy, Oklahoma.

9:00 am: Flag and Short Ceremony for Veterans
Coffee and donuts will be served until 10:30 am.

11:30 am: Return to hut for Flag Ceremony

12:00 noon: Potluck Dinner with Auxiliary.

Amateur Radio Club Organized

With 700,000 federally licensed amateur radio operators, or “hams,” in the United States, The American Legion has formed a special entity to provide a forum for military veterans who today are engaged in a hobby that can also provide emergency communications “when all else fails.” During Spring Meetings in Indianapolis May 4-5, the National Executive Committee authorized the establishment of The American Legion Amateur Radio Club (TALARC).
