for American Legion Post #142; Hominy, Oklahoma.

So old man winter served up a sucker punch this past week. I can’t really complain as we had plenty of warning. Like you we stocked up on groceries, fire wood, propane, and prepared to settle in for the Bedlam Game. On the latter regardless of your leanings it was a great game any Okie would have been proud of.
So the real story this week is the impact of the weather on all of our plans. Personally I like it when all my plans get adjusted, I enjoy a little shake up. I had a conflict with the scheduled parade last Saturday and then saw it was rescheduled for Sunday the 14th at 2:00 pm (Jerry, that’s 1400 hrs. for you and me. Steve, big hand on the twelve, little hand on the two). Our gang will meet up thirty minutes early to organize at the Hut. I am excited to be able to participate. Being relatively new to this band of brothers I enjoyed walking the parade last year as the “new guy”. It was exciting and it began growing my affection for Hominy. I must admit over the past year dealing with the folks at the paper, the incredible coffee at the diner, hanging out with Sean and Amber Roberts, experiencing the fellowship on Veteran’s Day festivities with the City and the Bucks at the High School was quiet an experience. Hominy is to me a special place. Your veterans range from WWII though the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Desert Storm, to the current conflicts. Your City has represented itself with distinction and honor. I could go on about the contributions of folks like Jim Frazier, Doc O’Leary, and Joe Breedlove but I would come up short of all the other hero’s you possess.
I show up when I can on Monday mornings to enjoy breakfast with my real hero’s. These guys did tough stuff in their day. Because of them we don’t speak German (I couldn’t imagine Japanese). On that note we play each Monday by ear, if the weather is not good, stay home. Most events have been put off till things are safe. Currently all meetings are postponed with the exception of the parade the 14th of Dec and the annual Toys for Tots drive headed by Babo and Doc O’Leary the 21st of this month at the Hut 9-1100 am. Last year it was an amazing success. Also note we will be hosting a Chicken Noodle Feast Fund Raiser January 18th. More details will follow but start marking your calendars now. Bring your young ones and give them an opportunity to meet Hominy’s heroes, learn some history, and make a mark on their young lives.
Our regular meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 1900 hours . Our Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings are run by Post Adjutant Eli Prater and Jerry Sebert. Over biscuits and gravy (or waffles) we will keep up on each other’s mischievous doings. It runs generally from 7 am to 9 am. If you are a veteran come join us (but watch the weather and use common sense). And if you have a good story it may end up in print.
