It is a fresh new year. Fresh beginings, New Year Resolutions soon to break. This is a good time to look back at the beginings of your American Legion Post 142 “Hut”. Thanks to our Adjundt John Hamilton, who did some research on our website (listed at the end of every weekly article) I present the history of the “Hut”. Best I can figure former Post commander Jim Frazier’s wife Polly put this together. So here we go. “Blackwell-Frazier American Legion Post #142 Hominy, Oklahoma. Post #142 meetings were originally held upstairs over the Dupy Furniture Store located at 124 West Main Street, in Hominy. However, in 1937, Past-Post Commander and Osage County Commissioner Joe Taylor saw an opportunity to purchase the Battery and Tire Shop at 118 South Wood. The building had been originally owned by local resident Joe Stebbins, but ultimately, it was purchased for some back taxes owed. In short order, World War I veterans started money-raising projects to refurbish the old building, which only had a dirt floor.
Two of the favorite fundraising activities at the time; were playing cards every Saturday night, and the famous pancake breakfasts, which served hundreds of people at a time. Before long, this quaint little gathering place became fondly known by its local nickname, the ‘American Legion Hut’. The nickname stuck, and the ‘Hut’ remains the current location for the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary meetings.” Again, this is on the Post 142 website under Memories>History of the Hut and so much more.
These are our last few months to sell tickets on the 10-Gun Raffle. The Post gets half of the proceeds. All of the Oklahoma 100th Anniversary coins have been sold out at State HQ. There are no more. We have some and they are only $5.00 for Post members and $10.00 for non-members. I’ll be buying a few for good friends and posterity!
Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings in January are still scheduled for biscuits and gravy or doughnuts and always a cup of Joe (coffee to the civilians). Just watch the weather, it is the only factor that my change that. Our next SAL meeting will be 2 January 2020 followed by our dinner and regular Legion meeting at 7:00 pm. If you are a veteran come on by. If you have a good story it may end up in print. Also keep up with us at website “americanlegion142.org”. Happy New Year Hominy!
