Come Join Us at The Hut

NEWS FROM THE HUT by John Hamilton

I would like to send out an open invitation to all veterans, in and around Hominy, Cleveland, and the surrounding vicinities to join the Legionnaires at Post 142 for our monthly meeting on the third Thursday of the month or our Monday morning Koffee Klatch at the Hut at 118 S Wood Street in Hominy, OK. If you would like to meet some of the veterans from Post142 in a more informal setting, you can stop by Bucks Eats and Treats on Main Street in Hominy for some coffee and several wonderful breakfast items.

I guess the cat is out of the bag by now, our Post 142 has finally resumed our Monday morning breakfast, or Koffee Klatch, as Gary put it, at the Hut. We normally serve biscuits and gravy with a side of scrambled eggs and bacon when it is Jimmy Himes turn in the kitchen which is on the first, second, and fourth Mondays of each month. The third Monday is Dennis Kidder’s turn to deliver breakfast with donuts and pigs in a blanket from Daylight Donuts. When the month happens to have a fifth Monday in it then Don Rainwater gets his opportunity to surprise everyone with his epicurean delights.

On Monday morning, a couple of weeks ago during breakfast at the Hut, we were surprised by a visitor, Natasja Kemp, who is from “The Cleveland American” newspaper in Cleveland, Oklahoma. Natasja also does reporting photography for the Hominy paper, the “Hominy News-Progress”. Natasja interviewed the group while we enjoyed the donuts and pigs in a blanket that Dennis Kidder had brought. We showed Natasja all the flags draped from the various walls and all the pictures of the previous Post Commanders. We also showed her the first yearbook the post put together that won first place in the Department yearbook contest held at the Department summer convention. Natasja’s article appeared in the Hominy News-Progress Wednesday, March 10, 2021.

The Wednesday morning “Shootout” at Bucks Eats and Treats is turning into a big success. Among the regular attendees are Dennis Kidder, Jimmy Himes, Don Rainwater, Jerry Jackson, Jack Cross and John Hamilton. With all of us together at Bucks Eats and Treats we are inevitably able to resolve much of the worlds problems and all the unresolved issues in Washington DC.

On Thursday, March 11, 2021 Charlie O’Leary and I attended a Department Senior Leadership meeting in Oklahoma City at Post 13 where several issues were discussed including changes to an American Legion online program, a guest speaker, General Robertson, at the Mid-Winter Conference, the ten-gun raffle, the National Commander’s visit May 24-27, Boys State May 29-June 5, Summer Convention July 16-18, and the National Convention August 27-September 2 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Until further notice, our regular Legion meeting will be the third Thursday of each month. Due to current weather issues, our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 15th at 7:00 PM. The Sons of the American Legion meetings have been suspended until further notice, depending on the future COVID-19 situation. All dinners have been cancelled until further notice. The Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings have been resumed at 8:00 AM. If you are a veteran, come by for our monthly meeting, and/or the Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings. Several of the Post 142 members meet on Wednesday’s at Bucks Eats and Treats for coffee and breakfast around 8:00 AM. If you have a good story, it may end up in print. Also keep up with us at the Post 142 website “” and Hominy Legion on Facebook.
