NEWS FROM THE HUT by John Hamilton
This past weekend was the annual Mid-Winter Conference held at the Grand Casino and Hotel in Shawnee. Oklahoma. From our Post 142, there were three members who attended the conference: The Post Commander Steve Swinford, the Vice-Commander Charlie O’Leary, and the Adjutant John Hamilton. The conference was held for two days from April 9 to April 10. On April 9, all the educational classes were held consisting of Post Adjutant Training, Computer/IT Training, Post Service Officer Training, Post Historian Training, Post Historian Training, and Post Honor Guard Training.
Friday evening all the attendees were invited to the Friday Night Social where we were served a very tasty salad, followed with a delicious lemon herb chicken with spiced mashed potatoes, and steamed, thinly sliced squash. Dessert was a strawberry covered whipped cream cheese. Iced tea was the beverage served to everyone. Everyone was extremely happy and satisfied with the menu for the evening.
On Saturday, April 10, a guest speaker, the Oklahoma State Secretary of Military and Veterans Affairs, Brigadier General (ret) Ben T. Robertson gave amazing and inspired speech about his efforts and plans to drastically improve services for all Veterans seeking assistance from the VA and to improve transition efforts for incarcerated veterans back into mainstream society.
In fear of being accused of repeating myself I would again like to send out an open invitation to all veterans, especially young, returning home and reservists in and around Hominy, Cleveland, and the surrounding vicinities to join the Legionnaires at Post 142 for our monthly meeting on the third Thursday of the month at the Hut located at 118 S Wood Street in Hominy, OK, our Monday morning breakfast or Koffee Klatch at the Hut, and/or our Wednesday morning “Shootout” at Daylight Donuts. If you would like to meet some of the veterans from Post142 in a more informal setting, you can stop by at our Koffee Klatch or Wednesday morning “Shootout”.
Until further notice, our regular Legion meeting will be the third Thursday of each month. Due to current weather issues, our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 15th at 7:00 PM. The Sons of the American Legion meetings have been suspended until further notice, depending on the future COVID-19 situation. All dinners have been cancelled until further notice. The Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings have been resumed at 8:00 AM. If you are a veteran, come by for our monthly meeting, and/or the Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings. Several of the Post 142 members meet on Wednesday’s at Daylight Donuts for coffee and breakfast treat around 8:00 AM. If you have a good story, it may end up in print. Also keep up with us at the Post 142 website “americanlegion142.org” and Hominy Legion on Facebook.
