DISTRICT 1A-1B CONFERENCE

NEWS FROM THE HUT by John Hamilton

Last Saturday, May 1, 2021 the American Legion District 1A-1B held their Spring Conference at Post 182 in Pryor, Oklahoma. The turnout was the biggest in District 1 history since WWII at over 78 members in attendance from multiple posts throughout District 1. Various topics involving American Legion programs were addressed by multiple Department of Oklahoma officers. One of those programs is Boys State that is to take place between May 29 and June 5, 2021and the delegates should arrive no earlier than 3:00 PM on the first day. Each delegate is required to fill out an application online at https://okboysstate.com/enrollment/.

The Hominy High School Counselor, Ms. Parks, presented this offer to six young men that may have been interested and would be required to write an essay. If anyone else could help sponsor a Hominy Junior or Senior for Boys State it would be appreciated. So far only one young man, Britt King, has written an essay and has been accepted by the Legionnaires of Post 142. Britt King must fill out the application online found at website https://okboysstate.com/enrollment/.

Another topic presented to the Legionnaires by the writer of this article at the District 1A-1B Spring Conference was the importance of putting together a Post Yearbook to capture all the history and dedicated members of your post, past and present.

Charlie O’Leary announced to the Legionnaire members of District 1 that he intends to run for the Department of Oklahoma Commander and would appreciate all their support in that endeavor.

There is a new Department raffle! It is the FREEDOM 10 GUN DRAWING! The raffle tickets are only $10, and our Post keeps $5.00, and we send $5.00 to State HQ. This is the only way we can get funding for the Post unless we get donations. COVID has pretty much shut everything down for now. And who knows, you might just be the lucky winner! And if you do not like guns, you can always donate the weapon to Post 142, and we will have our own raffle right here in Hominy! To get one or more of these tickets, just ask any Post 142 member or call John Hamilton at (408) 881-4302.

If there are any recently discharged veterans, an active-duty veteran, or a reservist in the Hominy or Cleveland area, please contact the Hominy American Legion Post 142 for help, comradery, coffee, breakfast or to just talk, we are here for you.

Until further notice, our regular Legion meeting will be the third Thursday of each month. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, May 20th at 7:00 PM. The Sons of the American Legion meetings have been suspended until further notice. We have resumed the tradition of the dinner at the meetings now on the third Thursday of each month. The Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings have been resumed at 8:00 AM. If you are a veteran, come by for our monthly meeting, and/or the Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings. Several of the Post 142 members meet on Wednesday’s at Daylight Donuts for coffee and a breakfast treat around 8:00 AM. If you have a good story, it may end up in print. Also keep up with us at the Post 142 website “americanlegion142.org” and Hominy Legion on Facebook.
