NEWS FROM THE HUT by John Hamilton
Today, we take a moment to remember U.S. Senator Bob Dole
Patricia Kime from Military.com reports that Sen. Dole was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors on Wednesday, February 2nd. For a remarkable lesson in American History, read her report <HERE>.
She notes an opinion piece published in The Washington Post shortly after his death, In his own words…Dole wrote of his love for the country and its symbols — and his hope for unity as a nation moving forward.
“Many nights during my time as majority leader, I would step out on my office balcony overlooking the National Mall and be reminded of what made my journey possible. Facing me were monuments to our nation’s first commander in chief, the author of our Declaration of Independence, and the president who held our union together. In the distance were the countless graves of those who gave their lives so that we could live free,” Dole wrote. “Our nation has certainly faced periods of division. But at the end of the day, we have always found ways to come together. We can find that unity again.”
On another note, during our last business meeting, we were evaluators for a test run for the upcoming “Chicken Noodle Fundraiser” that has not yet been scheduled but all the members agreed that it should be after April or even later. Our biggest concern is the weather, of course. Jimmy Himes prepared the chicken noodle soup, and it was very delicious. When we put on that fundraiser the entire town will have an epicurean delight. Prior to the fundraiser, the full menu will be posted here, under “News from the Hut.”
Our regular Legion meetings have changed back to the first and third Thursday of each month. Our next meeting, due to the Mid-Winter Conference, will be on Thursday, March 3rd at 7:00 PM.
