Baseball and other Games

Ah, it is springtime and the blessed rains have come along with the cry “Play Ball!”. I am looking forward to watching the boys of summer play whether it is sandlot or the Tulsa Driller games in town. I might also get to see the granddaughters of summer as well since our Alayna Bell is playing on her team in Skiatook. Even at the ripe old age of 9 she is playing with all her heart as are all the young ladies on the team. The Dirt Divas have been struggling thus far but I am sure success is around the corner.

Heroes of the Past

One of my favorite things to do is peruse facts and interesting stories. Growing up many years in Southern California I enjoyed the experience of forming friendships with many Americans of different ethnical backgrounds.  Hispanic, Japanese, Chinese, African Americans, all Americans to the core. I was always intrigued by the exploits of a special group of Japanese-Americans who, in defiance of the image perpetrated by the Pacific conflict during WWII signed up to fight in Europe for their country. And man did they fight. Here is one story that caught my eye.

How then should we Live?

This week I would like to depart from my usual reflections of the past and look to our future. Hominy is a wonderful place with a rich history. In all my years and travels around the globe driving into this town always lifts my spirits. Someone told me recently that you have to be from away to appreciate this place. I would agree as a new guy.

Remember!

We had a great meeting last Thursday evening at the Hut. Between vacations, weather, and all kinds of distractions it was pretty nice getting the gang together. We also had a new member join in.  Welcome aboard Ricky Butler (US Army veteran)! Our Commander Charles O’Leary showcased his and Nancy’s annual trip to Sacaton, AZ honoring the USMC, at the Ira Hayes/Iwo Jima Memorial Parade and Ceremony on the Pima Indian Reservation. It was pretty colorful and the background scenery was pretty dynamic given the beauty of the Arizona mountains and desert.

Ladies First!

I hope you are wearing the green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. I would like to make a tip O’ the hat to the ladies who have worn the green in service to their country. Today in 1967 the first woman Marine to reported to Vietnam for duty. Master Sergeant Barbara J. Dulinsky began her 18-hour flight to Bien Hoa, 30 miles north of Saigon. MSgt Dulinsky and the other officer and enlisted Women Marines that followed were assigned to the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) based in Saigon. Although most worked with the Marine Corps Personnel Section providing administrative support to Marines assigned as far north as the DMZ, two Lieutenant Colonels, Ruth Reinholz and Ruth O’Holleran, served as historians with the Military History Branch, Secretary Joint Staff, MACV.
