So old man winter served up a sucker punch this past week. I can’t really complain as we had plenty of warning.  Like you we stocked up on groceries, fire wood, propane, and prepared to settle in for the Bedlam Game.  On the latter regardless of your leanings it was a great game any Okie would have been proud of. Well the dishes are washed, house cleaned up (sorta), and family have departed the premise. I hope everyone had an exceptional Thanksgiving Day.  Activities precluded last week’s article, but now we are back.  Now we take the deep breath to forge on to the next holiday with new strength and vigor. I would like to take a moment to thank all those who thanked us, last week during the Veteran’s Day celebration.  This week’s article is dedicated to the civilians who recognized the service of veteran’s in the community spanning over seventy years.  From the newspaper staff to the wonderful members of the school staff and the students that participated, more than one tear was shed during the ceremony.  Many of us, like most in the population, had various reasons for joining the service.  Some of us were drafted and did our duty, some joined in the outrage following Pearl Harbor and 9-11.  Some of us joined for a step up, education benefits and perhaps job skill training.  Ultimately we all raised our hand and signed the contract vowing our very lives to defend the Constitution.  The fact that a community would take time to recognize this commitment says volumes about the heart and faith of that community.  Though I live in the country I find Hominy is my hometown now.  A young lady recited a famous poem at the high school ceremony, I would like to pass it on to those who could not attend. Although I missed the big Veteran’s Day Parade and activities in Fairfax last Saturday, I heard wonderful reports from my Legionnaire buddies Monday.  A team of eight hearty souls represented Hominy American Legion Post #142:  Jack Cross, Dick Pope, Babe Long, Steve Swinford, Jim Frazier, Charlie O’Leary, Eli Prater, and Jerry Sebert took their place near the front of the parade along with other veteran groups.  I was told there was a very large crowd and lots of activities.  Interesting to note that all but one member won some prize or another at the various merchant prize drawings.  The missing man had other duties and responsibilities to attend but all deserve our thanks for taking the time to reflect the Hominy community’s patriotism.  All this while my toes were in the sandy beaches of Mexico.  You know the saying “It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it”.
