We had a great time at the weekly Monday morning breakfast last Monday. I renewed my membership with the American Legion with our treasurer Jack Cross, and celebrated with the gang over a biscuit with gravy provided by Post Adjutant Eli Prater, and fellow fly boy Jerry Sebert. We discussed our pending Installation Ceremony which, as of last word, will be Thursday evening August 8th at the Post. Looks like a feast will be provided between the Auxiliary and members of the Post. Post Commander Jim Frazier is moving up in rank, as our District Vice Commander and Charles “Doc” O’Leary will step up to the leadership role for Post 142. Continue reading

This week marks an important date in history. It came to mind as I
reflect on several great conversations with our Adjutant Eli Prater. He
is a veteran of the Korean War, some call “conflict”. Aside from legal
terminology, I personally consider it war when our soldiers are called
into battle at cost of life or limb. That war ended with an agreement
to halt hostilities July 27th 1953. So while I was learning to crawl,
Eli was defending my freedoms from encroaching Communism. Continue reading

We had a good showing at the Koffee Klatch this morning. The usual cast
was on hand and unfortunately, not being retired, I had a short time to
enjoy the fun and frolic that ensues with this band of brothers. Where
else can you witness a coffee cup “squeal like a pig” (don’t ask). I
would like to tip my hat to Jerry Sebert and Eli Prater. They take time
to come out early and prep a great breakfast for the Wild Bunch every
Monday morning. Commander Jim Frazier has carried that load for many
years, and he has been able to take a long deserved rest. Continue reading

We had a good showing at the Koffee Klatch this morning.  Being on
vacation I got to hang around a little longer than usual, which led to a
special treat.  One of our locals, Randy Powell, introduced us to Mr.
Eduardo Abril Fontcuberta.  Hailing from Madrid Spain, with a home in
Nevada, “Ed” shared his two passions, Ham Radio operator and
Sniper/sharpshooter expert (the later passion is shared with Randy).  He
also spoke of his father’s exploits during WWII, and I was told he
trains sharpshooters and has authored several books.  He and Randy are
traveling this week to New Mexico for a competition of 50 caliber
rounds at 1,000 yard distance targets.  I will share the results when he
emails me later. Of course, our Chaplin Rex Mantooth was on
hand for biscuits and gravy. Continue reading

I have been pondering, as I do every time this year, the significance of our pending 4th of July celebration.  Since I have become involved with the Hut (American Legion Post 142) I see those who have continued our generation’s privilege to celebrate this great day on weekly basis.  Last Thursday evening’s meeting focused on that with the display of pictures captured on CD of Dick Pope and Babe Long’s Freedom Flight to DC to see the WWII Memorial and other sights. I also look toward our community and county where we need to be ever diligent to “Let Freedom Ring”.  We Americans have resources and free will to maintain our freedoms and honor those who secured our privileges with their blood and treasure.  Now let’s take a look back in remembrance of where this began. Continue reading
