“News from the Hut”

The Fairfax Veterans Day Parade kicked off on Saturday, November 8th, put on by Retired Seaman Leon Hendrix and Eva Donovan from Fairfax. Suffice to say American Legion Post 142 was well represented by Jerry Sebert, Dick Pope, Steve Swinford, Jack Cross, and this humble correspondent (who remains sore and limping from the parade walk). Kids we are no longer. But, with the inspiration of Leon Hendrix and his sorely sought after (but not-for-sale) little pick-em up truck…we marched, rode, and enjoyed the great comradery of the Fairfax community. His grandson, Brandon Benham, was busy both at the parade, as well as serving up lunch afterwards.
My new friends included Neil Conrad from Post 333 in Ralston (who fronted the Colors) and a former USAF and retired preacher; whose grandson Nathan walked and prodded us old timers along…wearing granddad’s old USAF dress coat. It was windy and cold, but the folks showed up to honor veterans, and that made it worth it. Thanks to Leon and his crew for the set up breakfast and lunch after. It was truly a great event!
By the time you read this, we will have had the Veteran’s Day event at the high school; who hosted the experience to honor America’s heroes who answered the call through the years. We asked for help to financially support this event and as usual the community put us over the top. I will report the “doings” next week to keep everyone up to date. Also during this week, Babo headed up the efforts to once again place flags with the team to honor those Veterans current and past for Veteran’s day. This is no small task, and we appreciate the reminder that the heart of our community respects our nation, and its loyal heroes.
The Christmas Parade is next on our schedule. The date is December 6th, Saturday at 0930 (that’s AM for the USAF types). I imagine it will be a chilling and thrilling experience for the youngsters. I know I will be toting a thermos of hot chocolate!
Scuttlebutt has it that the Christmas Dinner, which combines the Auxiliary with the rank and file of the Hut for the evening, will be hosted Friday at 1800 hrs (or 6:00 PM for Doc) the 12th of December.
Remember our regular meetings are the first and third Thursdays at 7:00 PM (20th of November). Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings in November are still up and running starting around 0700 till about 0900. Thanks to the crew there is usually biscuits and gravy, and maybe a waffle or two. and always a cup of Joe (coffee to the civilians). If you are a veteran come on by. If you have a good story it may end up in print! Also, keep up with us at website “americanlegion142.org”.
