Special Friends

We had a few nice surprises at the Hut last Thursday. I had a visit from a graceful lady who, during the week before, dropped in at my office and expressed her deep appreciation for all veterans and our Legion veterans in particular. She passed a note to gratitude along which was read to the Band of Brothers by Commander O’Leary along with a generous donation.

An extra surprise was a movie DVD called “Taking Chance” starring Kevin Bacon. This stirring movie looks and the special soldiers assigned to accompany the remains of a combat casualty on their journey back home with honor and dignity. She requested that our group view in the future knowing we would appreciate it. A round of applause followed the presentation. Thank you, Mrs. Ramona Brown, Salute!

The next surprise came from Babo Carter as he shared a gift from Larry and Tonya McKenzie, who have a long family heritage in Hominy. Apparently, they participated in one of the auctions for a storage area with unknown contents like the TV show has now and then. Winning the auction, they discovered a treasure trove on military items, mainly USAF. They include lapel pins, hundreds, displaying various aircraft and patriotic veteran theme. They also include stacks of aircraft postcards, frame pictures of USAF aircraft past and present as well as patriotic plaques. We four Flyboy types (Me, Jerry Jackson, Chef Sebert, and Jim Beckett) got first dibs. The rest will belong to the Hut for display and use. Thanks, so much McKenzies! Salute!

With the past week so busy putting flags up and taking them down there are still a few more activities planned. We will fly the flag for Flag Day June 14th and Father’s Day June 18th. So, we will put flags out on Main Street on Friday June 9th at 9:00am and pick up on Monday June 19th after the morning breakfast. For July, they will go up June 30th and retrieve July 7th. Volunteers are always needed. On the 4th of July, there is serious discussion about having a free hotdog cookout at the Hut for members of the Legion-Auxiliary and their families. 1230 to 1330 so everyone can get off to other activities. More details later.

Finally, out State Convention approaches July 14-16 in Norman OK at the beautiful Embassy Suites. Currently Commander O’Leary and Vice Commander Swinford are planning on attending. If you are a member and in good standing let us know. It is a great experience!

Don’t forget our regular meetings continue the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7:00 PM. Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings in June are still scheduled for biscuits and gravy and always a cup of Joe (coffee to the civilians). Keep your eye on the weather in case things have to be postponed. That will be most likely if the storms bring strong winds and lightning. If you are a veteran come on by. If you have a good story it may end up in print. Also keep up with us at website “americanlegion142.org”.
