Hominy Loses a Patriot

As many know we lost our past commander James (Jim) Frazier. Those who read the local paper saw him recognized with an extensive and impressive obituary. He was an Army veteran from Vietnam Era as well as re-upping during the Gulf War. I was a member of another Post that was a distance away. I happened into Marvins’s Grocery store in Hominy one day and saw our local paper. I was not familiar with Hominy so I picked up the paper took it home and read it.

I spotted ”News from the Hut” and was immediately taken by the author’s word crafting skills. I attended a morning breakfast and felt like I was family. Roy Arain was the author and, like me, hailed from southern California. We became fast friends but afrter a few months he passed away.

Jim and Eli approached me to take over the weekly article. He was a great leader and mentor. I had the opportunity to get to know his wife Polly, and son Micheal. That Post relationship led to me helping at the Hominy Community Center and eventually becoming City Manager. Thanks for the personal inspiration Jim, keep the coffee hot at the Supreme Commanader campfires till we can meet back up!

The officer elections are in and all officers remain place except for commander. The new commander, Steve Swindford as acted as Vice Commander since I have been there. Charley “Doc” O’Leary request to switch to Vice Commander and it was voted so. Everyone seems pleased. Rick Cook did the installation ceremony.

Also that evening the Post 142 Sons of the American Legion chapter was established. The commander is Rick Cook from Talala. I will be transferring my SAL membership from my old post the new froup as a “dual” member.

Our Chicken Noodle fundraiser will be this Friday April 12 from 1100 AM-1:00 PM at the Hut. Will need all hands on deck to put sign out at the 4-way stop on Main Street, will need food servers and we will take phone orders and will need delivery people. Jerry will put out posters around town at the businesses.

A final reminder, the next regular Legion meeting is the first and third Thursday of the month in April that is the 18th. Monday morning Koffee Klatch meetings in Ahe tpril are still scheduled for biscuits and gravy and always a cup of Joe (coffee to the civilians). Just watch the weather, it is the only factor that my change that. I think the Chef is on duty as we are heading into spring. If you are a veteran come on by. If you have a good story it may end up in print. Also keep up with us at website “americanlegion142.org”.
