Local Heroes

Did you know that FLAG DAY and the birthday of the US ARMY JUNE 14, 2019? So the Flag schedule for June is Wednesday 13 June at 9:00 am the Hut to place on Main Street and retrieve them on Monday June 17th 0900.

I am honored to be the guy that writes this weekly tribute to our local veterans and our Hominy Post 142. It seems like a simple task, do a little research, check on local things of a certain amount of import, and send it to the brass for a thumbs up. This past week has been more complicated. I was reflecting on the incredible sacrifices my own relatives endured, post traumatic WWII issues. I hang around with men at our very own Hominy Post 142 Post who, through WWII (they are slowly leaving), Korea, Vietnam, I see wounds most would not. They could not unless they were “there”. Our younger troops who are back are busy with the life of Dads and Moms raising kids, football, and such. The time will come when they will find the kids gone and maybe a longing to reassociate with comrades in arms. Who knows? I am just a writer of things.

So with the floods, the power losses, and all the things that come with life in this hard land of Oklahoma, I salute our proud veteran legacy. Hominy is the most patriotic community I have had the pleasure to be associated with. On that note, I would like to extend my abiding affection to Bonnie Liles and the ladies of the Auxillary for the amazing American Flag afgan they made for me. I was surprised and humbled and am so grateful (my wife has claimed it for herself LOL). I thought it was for the Post and Bonnie set me straight. To be honest, it beats all the corny ribbons they gave me in the military because it came from the heart.

Don’t forget we have tickets for sale. For only $10.00 [$5.00 goes to the Post] you could win $2,019.00 in cash at the drawing at State Convention in July! The first, second, and third place tickets will win $2,019.00! The next seven winners will get smaller amounts. We also have 100th anniversary American Legion “Challenge’ Coins for $10. They are one of a kind and a collectable item. I got mine, bought a few to present to a few special veteran friends as well.

Regular Legion meetings are usually the first and third Thursday of the month but this month it will be June 20th . Koffee Klatch meetings in June are still scheduled for biscuits and gravy and always a cup of Joe (coffee to the civilians). Just watch the weather, it is the only factor that my change that. I think the Chef is on duty as we are into the spring. If you are a veteran come on by. If you have a good story it may end up in print. Also keep up with us at website “americanlegion142.org”.
