As I write this on Sunday, I recall the US Navy destroyer, the USS Cole, refueling in Yemen on October 12th, 2000, suffered an enormous explosion in a terrorist attack. Initial reports had at least 6 sailors killed with 11 missing. The death toll was revised to 17. The 8,600-ton Cole was returned to the US aboard the Norwegian ship Blue Marlin. In 2001, a video tape by “Al-Sahab Productions” circulated among Muslim militants with footage of the bombed vessel. The Cole returned to active duty in 2003 following $250 million in repairs. This memory is vivid in my mind as my wife and I saw it on television while in an airport terminal while flying across country to Ft Polk, Louisiana. I told her “This is just the beginning”. Sadly, I was right. Eighteen months later I had begun deploying forty eight of my troops to Bagdad. Continue reading

Well, Jerry Sebert out did himself again, last Thursday evening.  A full house was treated to fried chicken…ala Marvin’s.  Plenty of sides were provided, as well as some of the best potato salad I ever tasted, next to my wife’s of course (whew, that was close!). I had my first Corn Pudding, I think Dick Pope provided.  I was wary at first, but it was delicious.  It surprised me to dig in and find raisins! Continue reading

I always enjoy researching home grown heroes. On this date seventy years ago Harold Kiner was a Private, U.S. Army, Company F, 117th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division. He earned the Congressional Medal of Honor due to the heroic sacrifice made near Palenberg, Germany on 2 October 1944. He entered service in Enid, Oklahoma born in Aline, Oklahoma. With four other men, he was leading in a frontal assault 2 October 1944, on a Siegfried Line pillbox near Palenberg, Germany. Machine gun fire from the strongly defended enemy position 25 yards away pinned down the attackers. The Germans threw hand grenades, one of which dropped between Pvt. Kiner and two other men. With no hesitation, Private Kiner hurled himself upon the grenade, smothering the explosion. By his gallant action and voluntary sacrifice of his own life, he saved his two comrades from serious injury or death. Continue reading

This week’s article is an easy task.  Our commander, Charles O’Leary published outstanding minutes from our last meeting; and it summed up the week.  Last Thursday, Jerry Sebert knocked it out of the park cooking the ribs for dinner, and a special thanks to Eli Prater and others who helped with sides.  We had 15 members present and everyone had a good time. It’s Hot!

As I convalesce in the dog days of the August Oklahoma heat, I tend to stay inside and avoid the trauma of the high temperatures.   For those hearty few that read my ramblings, I would be remiss not to remind you to check on your elders.  Make sure they have the old AC going, and just let them know you are thinking about them.  Also ensure your critters are well tended.  My three “lucky dogs” lie on the floor downstairs living like kings and queens without a care in the world.  I have become more sensitive to the issue having been dealt a heat stoke a few months back.  It was not fun, and as a former Safety NCO you have your orders to hydrate and avoid excessive exposure.  Okay, safety briefing concluded.
